The "Broadstreet Bullies" didn't really have a softer side, but if they did it might have looked something like this folk art set. Presented is a 1974-1975 Philadelphia Flyers Stanley Cup Champions ornament set of (30). Very likely the only one of its kind in existence, this fantastic set depicts all of the key players from the Flyers back-to-back championships in 1974 and 1975, along with head coach Freddie "The Fog" Shero, and unofficial team mascot Kate Smith, who gets major props for firing up the "Bullies" and their passionate fans before big games, with her roof raising rendition of "God Bless America". This unique set of Christmas tree ornaments is fashioned from egg shells, with hand-painted likenesses on the interior, metal bead trim on the edge and brass hooks inserted at top. A loving tribute to these great hockey champions, this set amps up the wow-factor big-time, with (26/30) signed on the back, with the signature strength ranging ("7" to "9"). Given the fragile nature of this unique folk art creation, these egg shell ornaments have held up remarkably well, with just partial separation of the beaded chains on a few pieces.
Highlight are: Hall of Famers: Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent, Bill Barber, Fred Shero; and notables: Barry Ashbee, Rick MacLeish, Reggie Leach, Ed Van Impe, Dave Schultz;
Balance are: Andre Dupont, Gary Dornhoefer, Bob Kelly, Orest Kindrachuk, Ross Lonsberry, Joe Watson, Jim Watson, Tom Bladon, Don Saleski, Terry Crisp, Ted Harris, Bill Clement, Larry Goodenough, Jack McIlhargey, Bobby Taylor, Mel Bridgman, and assistant coach Mike Nykoluk.
Auction LOA from JSA for all (26) autographs.
The unsigned ornaments are: Simon Nolet, Bill Flett, Wayne Stephenson, and Kate Smith.
Ms. Smith suffered a diabetic coma in 1976, and was reportedly unable to sign her name upon her recovery. Mel Bridgman joined the Flyers as a rookie for the 1975-76 season. Barry Ashbee succumbed to illness in 1977. These conditions indicate this set was likely created, and the autographs gathered circa 1976.
