More than any other installment in sports history, the 1927 “Murderers Row” roster spawns mystique and tales regarding every last element. Thus, it’s only fitting that memorabilia linked to that storied Bronx roster has inherent value exceeding that of all other sports artifacts. Fitting that category is the offered prize: a “Spalding” signature model catcher’s mitt attributed to Hall of Fame backstop Bill Dickey during the latter portion of his career. Crafted circa 1945, the right-handed “tool of ignorance” features streamline fingers, lock stitch lacing and an adjustable leather strap. Heavy use is apparent with scuff marks and wear throughout. Use possibilities include Dickey (1946) and his star pupil Yogi Berra, who also employed this exact model. Full photo LOA from John Taube, PSA/DNA.
