The lone bachelor to be elected U.S. President, 15th Chief Executive James Buchanan was the author of this resplendent signature. Measuring approximately 7-3/4 x 4”, the document is, in essence, a personal check. Dated “September 22, 1857,” the voucher is made out to Buchanan in the amount of $636.52. On the reverse, Buchanan has endorsed the check in black ink. The flowing penmanship and even strength combine to project (“8-9”) strength and clarity. The vintage piece has compacting folds and tiny separations (likely period “cancellation” markings), none of which affect Buchanan’s bold scripting. Having just taken office at the time of this document, Buchanan (unsuccessfully) faced the daunting issue of secession. Accompanying is an LOA from John Reznikoff, University Archives. This item has a reserve (estimated value $1000-$2000).
